5 Things every hair stylist should know about coloring transplanted hair

Share

As early as the 1800′s, so-called “scalp flaps” where used to address natural balding. Today, hair transplantation has grown widespread for both men and women. While natural hair loss is more common among men, women are often faced with the challenges of dealing with hair loss too. Hair loss in women has been a fast growing problem for both the individual and their chosen beauty professional as the population has been aging, and medical advancement has been developing highly effective treatments for specific diseases that have proven to compromise other aspects of patient’s health such as their hair, transplantation has become a more and more popular option.

Matter of Trust – Your hair could help protect Southwest Florida beaches

A technology that turns hair into absorbent barriers against oil could now be used to save our beaches from the oil spill in the Gulf.

Around one pound of hair is thrown away every day by every salon in the country.

“I’ve been a hair stylist for 23 years and I think we used to ask that question every day. ‘What can we do with it?’” said Andrea Sorrenti of Andrea’s Organic Salon in Naples.  Andrea’s Organic Salon has been on the forefront of environmental and social responsibility in the salon industry and has been using Organic Color Systems since 2008.

She said she has been collecting hair clippings for the last four years.

“Every time they see me throwing hair in my little bag, now they’re going to see a good cause,” she said.

There are hair color options for women who don’t want to itch and burn.

My hair is very easy to color, but I do react badly to too many chemicals. So I decided to investigate. I found out that many women react badly to the high amounts of ammonia in permanent hair dye.  And the stylists know it!  Some, such as my last stylist, even mixed packets of sweetener into the hair color to help prevent the itching.  It is this ammonia that makes hair salons smell so darned awful in the color area.

There are options for women who don’t want to itch and burn, but still want pretty colored hair. I spoke with Hilton Bell who founded Organic Color Systems, a professional line of ammonia-free color.  It was the first ammonia-free line in salons around the world with a full range of natural shades full-range of shades.  Mr. Bell’s company did extensive research, and found out that most hair color reactions – up to 99 percent, according to their results – came from ammonia.

Organic Color Systems – the most natural and organic professional color available today.

Its unique oil-delivery system has replaced the need for a highly toxic substance such as ammonia to swell and blast open the cuticle. Instead, soya oil softens the cuticle allowing gentle heat to open it, deliver the color into the hair shaft, and create a permanent result.

You may ask why other color lines aren’t employing this oil-delivery system that’s been proven to work for 15 years, and in 32 countries around the world.   Simply put, it’s more expensive to manufacture this type of color line. The ingredients required are more costly, so profit margins are affected, and large corporations are much more driven by their bottom line.

Captivating Color Looks

Organic Color Systems is fortunate to have Karine Jackson as the Creative Director for our main product’s manufacturer; Herb UK.  Karin Jackson, who is a world renowned hairdresser and has been named London Hairdresser of the Year, has been using the Organic Color Systems product line for several years.  In addition to her leading-edge cutting skills, Karine is also a brilliant colorist. Those who have been fortunate enough to have been trained by her have been able to take away new techniques and see what amazing results can be achieved by using Organic Color, Organic Care Systems, and Organic Control Systems.

Karine’s key trends have been vibrant dense organic colors – rich coppers, fiery reds, ice blondes and midnight blacks – using block techniques and heavy panelling for the application of color.  Her cuts can be very dramatic (think shaven sides with conflicting bouncy soft curls), and bowl cuts with heavy fringes.  Basically she is able to make the world of glamor meet nature’s organic best.

Organic Color Systems Featured by the New York Times

By not using ammonia, Organic Color System’s magic bullet is heat coupled with an oil base. This actually suspends color molecules in an oil base, which softens the cuticle, and then uses heat to open the it rather than blowing it open with ammonia.

Chemical Exposure and Allergies

Share

There are many different ideas about what causes allergies. There is some evidence to suggest that working with skin and lung irritating chemicals could increase the incidence of allergies. At a meeting of the American Public Health Association it was revealed that researchers at the Boston School of Public Health in Massachusetts have been investigating the health risks of exposure to chemicals in hair salons. Out of 56 workers interviewed, 15% said they suffered from hives, eczema, and asthma. Thirty percent reported they had hay fever.
